父の後を追って病死？性格もよく美男子、藤原道隆の長男・藤原道頼の生涯をたどる【光る君へ】

長徳元年（995年）4月10日、関白であった藤原道隆（みちたか）が病によって世を去りました。
そのたった2ヶ月後となる6月11日、その庶長子である藤原道頼（みちより）も後を追うように病で世を去ります。
NHK大河ドラマ「光る君へ」では藤原伊周（これちか）・藤原隆家（たかいえ）兄弟ばかりがクローズアップされて全く登場しませんが、藤原道頼とはどんな人物だったのでしょうか。
そこで今回は､藤原道頼の生涯をたどってみたいと思います。
異母弟たちの後を追いながら
藤原道頼は天禄2年(971年)、道隆の長男として誕生しました。
幼名は大千代(おおちよ)、母親は藤原守仁女(もりひとのむすめ)です。
決して低い身分ではないのですが、高階貴子(たかしなの たかこ。儀同三司母)の方が娘をたくさん産んだためか重んじられていきます。
しかし祖父の藤原兼家(かねいえ)から大層可愛がられ、たっての願いで養子に迎えられました。兼家の六男となった道頼。父の弟というのは、微妙な気分だったかも知れません。
永延2年（988年）に生母が亡くなったため、家中での立場はますます弱まっていきます。
また正暦元年(990年)には祖父で養父の兼家も亡くなり、すっかり影が薄くなってしまった道頼。父の道隆が政権を握ると嫡流は完全に伊周・隆家に移りました。
それでもエリートの家系ゆえに、異母弟たちの後を追う形で順調でに出世していきます。
しかし長徳元年(995年)に父が飲水の病(糖尿病による合併症)で世を去ると、その2ヶ月後に疫病(天然痘)を患い、父の後を追うように世を去ります。時に6月11日、享年25歳でした。
絵から抜け出したような美貌の持ち主
そんなパッとしない（周囲の人々からすれば、それでもかなり贅沢な）感じだった藤原道頼の生涯。
しかし平安時代の歴史物語『大鏡』によれば「絵から抜け出したような美貌の持ち主で、兄弟に似ず性格もよく、ジョークやユーモアを解した（意訳）」とか。
また清少納言『枕草子』では「伊周たちより美男子だったが、世間からは醜男扱いされて気の毒だった」と言われています。もしかしたら、伊周たちに対する忖度があったのかも知れませんね。
その美貌と人となりから古典文学『落窪物語（おちくぼ）』に登場するヒロインのお相手役・右近少将道頼（うこんのしょうしょう みちより）のモデルではないかとも言われるそうです。

終わりに
長男でありながら異母弟たちに実権を奪われ、父の後を追うように病死したというから実に可哀想な人かと思ったら……これで文句を言ったら罰が当たるレベルのスピード出世でしたね。
もちろん若くして命を落とすのは気の毒ですが、それでも若くしてここまで栄達するのは、やはり中関白家の御曹司なればこそです。
NHK大河ドラマ「光る君へ」では割愛されるでしょうが、もし登場するなら絵から出てきたような美貌を楽しみにしています。

Fujiwara no Michiyori was born in 971 as the eldest son of Michitaka Fujiwara. His childhood name was Ochiyo, and his mother was Takako Takashina, who also mothered Gidō Sanji. Despite Takako being respected for having many daughters, Michiyori was especially cherished by his grandfather, Kaneie, who adopted him as his sixth son.
Michiyori's mother passed away in 988, which diminished his standing in the family. When Kaneie, his grandfather and adoptive father, died in 990, Michiyori was further overshadowed by his biological father, Michitaka. As Michitaka ascended to power, the family's alliances shifted towards the Ishi and Takashi clans, affecting the line of succession.
Michiyori ascended within the nobility following in his half-brothers' footsteps. However, in the first year of the Chōtoku era (995), tragedy struck when his father died from a waterborne disease. Just two months later, Michiyori himself succumbed to the plague, passing away on June 11 at the young age of 25.
The life of Fujiwara no Michiyori was not particularly ostentatious, though still extravagant to those around him.
According to the Heian-period historical tale "Ogami," he had beauty as if taken from a painting, a pleasant personality like his brothers, and a keen understanding of jokes and humor.
In Sei Shonagon's "The Pillow Book," it is noted that although he was more handsome than Iju, society considered him unattractive, which was unfortunate. This may have stemmed from unfavorable comparisons with Iju and others.
Because of his good looks and charming personality, he reportedly served as the inspiration for Ukon no Shosho Michiyori, the heroine's partner in the classic literature "Ochikubo Monogatari" (Tales of Ochikubo).
This article traces the life of Fujiwara no Michiyori, the eldest son of Fujiwara no Michitaka. Despite being the eldest son, he tragically lost his power to his half-brothers and died young from illness.
His rapid rise to power, although it led to conflicts with his half-brothers, was remarkable. It is unfortunate that he died at a young age, but achieving such wealth at a young age was uncommon for someone of his rank.
Although he won't feature in the NHK Taiga Drama "Hikaru Kimi e," it would be interesting to see him included.
